World Mental Health Day

Today marks the day when Mental Health awareness is celebrated through “World Mental Health Day.” It is fundamentally a day of international awareness which works towards investing in mental health. 

World Mental Health Day is observed every year on October 10. This includes involvement in crucial matters like global mental health education against social stigma related to it. 

This year it is all about raising the bar and engaging people towards the inclusion of mental health organisations. A lot many instances are there from childhood till present-day life when some way or the other we had faced mental anxiety and depression. As it seems to be the less discussed topic, nobody bothers to open it up. 

For this reason, under the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health and the Deputy Secretary-General Richard Hunter, the first-ever World Mental Health Day was celebrated on October 10, 1992. Each year several representatives gather to celebrate the awareness programme associated with the same and shed some light on mental illness.

Even though we are residing in the 21st century, we are not open to awareness related to mental health. Right from the student who could not clear the IIT exam to a girl who was being molested since childhood, no one is ready to understand the mental state behind the same.

Now, during this pandemic when people were isolated from the mainstream work, the state of depression has increased manifold. This is the time when people have realised how without work people can’t even enjoy the daily tits and bits of life. The anxiety of losing work, lifestyle and isolation have been attributed to the cause of anxiety to a larger extent.

Mental Health forms a crucial part of the overall health of an individual. This is largely associated with the stigma where people are often not open to treatment or recovery. 

Talking about mental health helps in improving the mental well being of people who are suffering from the same and need support. It is that one conversation keeping aside the stigma that whatever it is, it is normal and there is a way to recover.
