The Women self help group of Tripura has sought to celebrate the eco friendly Diwali with innovative bamboo diyas and candles. Using eco-friendly products this Diwali is only advisable keeping in mind the current pollution status across India, especially in Delhi-NCR. And adhering to the same, the women self help group of Tripura took this initiative.
They were created by an all-women self-help group based in the Sepahijala district of the state. Recently, they were launched officially by the chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb. He hailed the creation, which was sitting well under the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative which PM Narendra Modi has often emphasized whenever he addresses the nation. After lamps made out of cow dung, a set of ‘Bamboo Diyas’ has been created.
Samaj Shakti Society, a self-help group is making bamboo candles as Diwali nears. The group has sold candles worth Rs 12,000 so far. “There is demand for these candles, we’ve received some orders. We have sold candles worth Rs 12,000, we hope to do good business in coming days,” said Biplab, member of the SHG.
While this is an eco-friendly and innovative idea, it was not exactly the group’s brainchild. “We never had the concept of bamboo candles until the DM, BDO, and cluster coordinator came with the proposal to us, asking if we can make candles out of bamboo. We accepted the proposal and enjoyed making them in different sizes, designs, and prices,” A member of the group named Dipali Paul told ANI. Meanwhile, if mulling won’t the bamboo catch fire when lighted? Well, the makers assure you that it won’t happen.
This women Self-Help group of Tripura has provided an abundance of employment opportunities for the women in the state. Along with that, bamboo has also served to be an all-important material with which various items such as water bottles, cookies, rice, etc, which can be sold in the market at a good price. Amidst the ongoing standoff with China in Ladakh, many of governments across India have been urging people to purchase indigenously churned goods like cow dung diyas this Diwali and parts ways from Chinese products.
